Pursue Your New Path
Helping successful professionals to manage career transition.
"If you are successful, it is because somewhere, sometime, someone gave you an idea that started you in the right direction." -- Melinda French Gates, Valedictory Speech, Ursuline Academy, 1982
Career Coaching is a partnership which focuses first on identifying and clarifying your career goals, and then working to attain those goals using strategies and solutions which come from within YOU! This goal-oriented and action-centered relationship is what helps keep you moving in the right direction for you.
Yes it does! I have used the services of a career coach myself. As a client, I found it worked because I had a partner who helped me stay on target to meet my goals. But it also worked because as my coach listened and really HEARD the UNDERLYING message, I was able to become aware of my own potential stumbling blocks to moving forward.
Therapy deals primarily with the diagnosis of emotional wounds and the healing of those of wounds. Coaches are not trained to diagnose and heal a client’s wounds from their past and thus coaching focuses on the present and how the client achieve his/her own definition of success going forward. If past issues in your life have you “stuck”, you may benefit more from therapy at this time than coaching.
Consultants are hired for their expertise in a specific area, and then to deliver an end-result that meets a specific goal. Consultants have expert knowledge, and tell you (or your company) what to do and how to do it. Coaches, on the other hand, emphasize client responsibility and accountability for the results they hope to gain from being coached. Clients are naturally resourceful and are their own best experts on the best career and life for them. The coach helps the client find those answers by listening deeply and asking powerful questions designed to elicit those answers.
It’s really a matter of focus. Career counseling focuses on the specifics of getting yourself hired for a specific job: the job search, crafting a resume, brushing up interview skills, and the like.
Career coaching focuses on uncovering your passions, goals, dreams, and talents and then uses that information in identifying a career which most closely fits you. A career that fits you will allow you to bring your best, most productive self to the workplace.
If you find yourself agreeing with any of the statements listed below, then career coaching may be right for you. To try it out for yourself, you can take advantage of the complimentary coaching session I offer. (Click here to request a complimentary session.)
I got into this career to please someone else, but it’s not really what I wanted for myself
I am feeling “stuck”
I don’t know what path to take
I know which path to take, but can’t seem to get going!
I want to find a more rewarding career
I have talents and skills that I am not using, and I want to
I just got laid off and am still feeling shell-shocked!
I need more clarity before making a choice
I need the support of someone who isn’t trying to pigeon-hole me as I consider all my career options
How long it takes ultimately depends on how much time you are willing and able to devote to the process. My role as your coach is to help you determine the best way of reaching your goal, and to help you break your goal down to the smallest steps necessary to allow you to reach your goal step by step.
